About
I’m Michael Bauer-Wapp, CTO at BauTask and an independent software consultant from Austria. I work fully remotely.
My interest in computers started when I was quite young. I’ve always liked to tinker around and was the person in the family known for being good with these new technologies.
Throughout my school years, I was more interested in maths and computers than in languages or other subjects. I was on the fence between studying math or computer science, but ultimately decided to take the programming route. I started programming before university and have continued ever since.
After completing my Master’s degree in computer science at the Technical University of Vienna, I worked at various companies before finally deciding to switch from full-time employment to becoming an independent software developer, working with various businesses along the way.
Today I’m CTO at BauTask, a construction management platform built on Ruby on Rails. I own the technical direction, the architecture, and how the team builds. It’s a contract role on paper, but in practice it’s where most of my time and ownership go. Alongside it I keep working with a select few other clients.
My passion lies in being a professional partner for people building software — whether that means writing the code or owning the technical direction. I have a business-forward mindset and understand the needs and tradeoffs necessary to build a company. I help guide and navigate the technical challenges along the way, and I will happily make sure your software is capable of achieving what you require from it.
Nowadays, I specialize in modern web development, mostly doing Ruby on Rails and Next.js work.
Most of my time goes to BauTask these days, so I take on only a small number of new engagements — but if you need a reliable and highly skilled partner for your software project, get in touch.
